1: Obvious signs of damage
The best way to prevent damage and avoid costly repairs is to address any problems before it becomes a leak. After any significant storm and at least once per month during storm season ideally, you should check your roof for damage. If you’re not comfortable getting on the roof to check for signs of damage, such as missing or damaged flashing or holes contact us at Paramount Waterproofing Solutions and we can arrange a visit to check it for you. We have proper safety equipment, tools, and expertise to spot and repair potential problems long before they lead to significant roof damage.
2: Debris on the Roof
We also suggest that you after a heavy storm and certainly after hurricane season a quick inspection for any debris that may have blown onto the roof. Even in a mild storm, high winds can blow items from adjacent property onto the roof. Debris on the roof can harbor moisture and making it more difficult for your roof to dry, which may damage the roof surface. For this reason – storage of items on the roof is not a good idea. Not only can items stored on the roof damages the roof surface in good weather, they can become scattered on the surface during storms penetrating the surface or, blow onto adjacent property.
3: Clogged gutters and roof drains
Heavy rain and high wind can blow debris in and around gutters and roof drains. When they are filled with branches, leaves, and rocks, the water is unable to flow freely to the downspouts and away from your property. Water buildup around the foundation of the building may cause intrusion of water and other damage to the property. Ponding water around drain pipes and rotting debris may also damage the roof surface.
Ideally, you should walk the roof after every significant storm, checking for these obvious signs of damage. By doing so you will become familiar with what is ‘normal’ on your property and make it much easier to identify any new damage.
